GCSE
Overview and Key Facts
GCSEs are a crucial step in the educational system and are also important for entry into Higher Education and most vocational training in the UK. Although students may join David Game College having already taken GCSE examinations, they may want to add additional subjects to their GCSE portfolio or improve on their grades. They might also be an international student who needs to gain recognised UK qualifications for Higher Education in order to satisfy university matriculation requirements.
Course Duration
GCSE is an intensive one year programme and is suitable for both first time students and students who have taken GCSEs elsewhere but need to raise their grades. On average our students take five subjects. We can be very flexible in meeting academic needs and we can also arrange timetables for students who wish to take on more than five subjects and commit to a course covering one and a half academic years or longer. We can also provide retake courses for students who want to improve their GCSE results. A typical GCSE programme comprises 20-25 hours of tuition per week, conducted in small classes where students can benefit from exceptional amounts of personal attention and feedback.
Key Facts
- Students can start their courses in September or January, depending on the number of subjects they wish to take. Retake courses run from September to November each year.
- David Game students have individually tailored timetables to match their course length and chosen subjects. A typical GCSE week will comprise 20-25 hours of tuition and 5 hours of supervised private study
- With the exception of Mathematics all GCSEs have a significant coursework component. It is very important that students complete their coursework by the given deadline and also to a high standard. Students are given all the help and necessary support and encouragement to ensure that this happens and we also monitor our students very closely and guide them, so that they take a mature and responsible approach to the production of coursework.
Minimum age
Our GCSE students are among the youngest that enrol at David Game College (minimum entry age 14), and they receive particularly careful attention and support. Great emphasis is placed upon developing their own study skills, with five supervised private study hours included in each student’s weekly time-table. We maintain close supervision of their attendance and achievement, and if any one does appear to start slipping behind, we are quick to step in with all the necessary help, encouragement and discipline to get them back on track again. At the end of every term parents receive a library report recording their child’s performance during study periods, in addition to subject reports and parents’ evenings each term.
